Abortion Liberation Fund of PA (ALF-PA) seeks a highly experienced, skilled, passionate, and adaptable Executive Director to carry out the organization’s mission and vision for reproductive justice and access.

Location: Mostly remote, based in Philadelphia, PA
Travel: This role will involve minimal travel. Overnight trips for staff convenings can be expected 2-3 times/year.
Supervised by: Board of Directors
Supervises: Director of Client Services, Development Manager, Development Director, and Operations Manager.

The Abortion Liberation Fund of PA (ALF-PA) protects and expands access to abortion for people experiencing poverty in Southeastern Pennsylvania through direct service and community organizing. About the position: The Executive Director drives ALF-PA toward the achievement of its mission while ensuring the sustainability of its operations. The ED leads strategic planning for the organization and works with staff to implement those plans. They work closely with the Director of Development to fundraise for the organization, coordinate directly with donors, and lead the administration and program supervision of the organization. The ED speaks publicly on abortion access and reproductive justice issues and acts as a spokesperson for the organization both to the public and the Board. The Executive Director position is crucial to the success of ALF-PA, and will continue to be as the organization plans to grow.
Job responsibilities:
Organizational Management and Administration
Lead the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plans and institutional policies and procedures, with appropriate Board and staff participation.
Monitor and evaluate achievement of all organizational goals and objectives, continuously aligning operational capacity with strategic priorities.
Ensure operation in full compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well as all funder, insurance and financial auditing requirements.
Prepare regular and periodic reports for regulatory agencies, funders, the Board, and other necessary agents.
Leadership and Advocacy
Participate in and actively support the reproductive justice movement through collaboration with existing partners and cultivation and organizing of new relationships including community-based partnerships and coalitions.
Ensure ALF-PA’s position as a visible, trusted resource in the local and state communities as well as the national field.
Actively engage and energize ALF-PA’s broad range of constituents and stakeholders, ensuring inclusion and representation of all voices, including people directly impacted by abortion restrictions.
Co-create an organizational culture that embraces reproductive, racial, and economic justice.
Develop community-based partnerships and coalitions to keep abortion access in the public consciousness and at the center of public health and social justice.
Keep abreast of trends and opportunities in relevant fields and integrate new information into programming, as appropriate.
Fundraising and Communications
In partnership with the Board and staff, create, maintain, and implement a development plan to identify funding sources, diversify funding streams, and achieve strategic goals.
In partnership with the Development Director, oversee the organization’s annual fundraising campaign and fundraising activities, including individual giving, grant writing and reporting, the implementation of fundraising events, and appropriate employee deduction campaigns.
Identify, cultivate, nurture, and maintain relationships with a broad array of donors.
Partner with the Board in developing and implementing marketing efforts to enhance organizational visibility.
Serve as chief spokesperson for the organization, responsible for representing and articulating the mission and vision of ALF-PA as well as the organization’s approach to media coverage of abortion access issues.
Oversee the production of all print and digital materials describing ALF-PA, including the website, social media accounts, newsletters, brochures and other development and informational materials.
Staff Development and Supervision
Ensure sound human resource policies and practices are in place to maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse, top-quality staff, interns, and volunteers.
Ensure orientation of staff, interns, and volunteers to policies and organizational mission, philosophy, and governing regulations.
Develop and mentor staff to achieve program and organizational goals, while enabling professional and personal growth that fosters job satisfaction.
Oversee the proper maintenance of personnel practices and records in accordance with state and federal laws.
Ensure proper staffing of both paid and volunteer positions through effective recruiting and hiring, training and professional development, management, evaluation, and termination practices.
Board Development
In partnership with relevant board members, develop agendas and supporting materials for Board (and committee) meetings.
Support the Board in executing its governance responsibilities by keeping Board members fully informed of and advised about relevant issues through monthly verbal and quarterly verbal and written reports as well as additional communications, as appropriate.
Support Board development efforts – including education, board recruitment, and board orientation – that ensure the Board and board leadership include diverse representation of people impacted by abortion restrictions.
Attend Board meetings and (as appropriate) committee meetings.
Financial and Information Systems Management
In partnership with the Board Finance Committee, develop and meet budget projections and align them with the strategic goals and capacity of the organization.
Evaluate and maintain sound financial practices and systems to manage day-to-day financial operations, including the distribution of funds to abortion care providers.
Prepare and present financial statements to the board.
Ensure the proper tracking of records, data, and statistics to support reporting and service requirements for stakeholders.
Oversee financial processing and reconciliation of bills and deposits
Ensure the evaluation, maintenance, and upgrades (as needed) of IT software and systems, including client and donor databases.
Conduct fiscal oversight in collaboration with the Operations Manager.
Continually strengthen, prioritize, and work to ensure digital and physical security and privacy of all staff, volunteers, donors and those to whom we provide abortion funding.
Abortion Liberation Fund is currently in a period of growth of the organization. The following will be done by the Executive Director within the two years of employment but will not be ongoing responsibilities.
Hire a Development Director.
Hire an Operations Manager.
Hire an Organizing Director with whom they will develop an organizing program for the organization.
Work with the Organizing Director to hire staff for the organizing department.
Requirements
Demonstrated experience in nonprofit management/organizational leadership, with ability to influence and drive organizational evolution in keeping with mission, strategic goals, and capacity.
8-10+ years of experience working in nonprofits including at least one year of experience in reproductive justice.
2 years of nonprofit administrative experience in some capacity (does not have to be in a purely operations or administrative role, but must include significant administrative responsibility).
3 years of supervision experience including managing a team of at least 3 employees at one time.
Experience working at an organization which offers direct services like legal or healthcare services.
Experience in a leadership role during an organizational tax audit.
Experience managing a budget of $750k required; experience managing a budget of $1 million or more highly preferred.
Experience in developing and implementing a fundraising strategy/plan including direct experience fundraising from major donors, which ALF-PA defines as any donation of $1,000 or larger.
Experience in participating in shared decision making, like in coalition spaces required; experience leading or facilitating this kind of shared decision making preferred.
Experience growing an organization or department through hiring and staff development.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders, such as: donors, healthcare providers, partner organizations, local and state officials, fiscal sponsors, and communities with limited access to abortion.
Commitment to issues of reproductive health and justice as well as a demonstrated understanding of how systemic poverty and racism intersect with reproductive oppression.
Demonstrated ability to speak out publicly and persuasively.
Knowledge and appreciation of the role of advocacy and grassroots organizing in achieving systems change required; experience working in advocacy or grassroots organizing highly preferred.
Familiarity with nonprofit governance and ability to work well with a Board of Directors.
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
Comfort with technology and ability to enhance systems.
High level of adaptability.
Experience in or knowledge of trauma informed practices preferred but not required.
Fluency or proficiency in Spanish preferred but not required.
