Description
The Department of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a 1-year, fully funded Surgical Education & Simulation Fellowship, based within our ACS-AEI–accredited Simulation Center. This unique opportunity is ideal for surgical trainees interested in developing advanced expertise in simulation-based education, curriculum design, and educational research.
About the Fellowship:
The Simulation Fellow will work closely with faculty leadership across General Surgery, Simulation Education, and the Penn Medicine Health System to design, implement, and evaluate multi-modal training experiences for surgical residents and students.
The fellowship offers immersive experience in technical teaching, curriculum development, program evaluation, and simulation operations within a high-volume academic center.
The fellow will be eligible to pursue formal graduate-level training through the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (GSE), including: Health Professions Education Certificate (HPEC) Program
There are no clinical duties associated with this role.
Core Responsibilities:
Develop, deliver, and evaluate simulation-based educational activities for surgical residents and medical students
Coordinate and support hands-on procedural training including open, laparoscopic, endoscopic, robotic, trauma, and critical care skills modules
Assist in the design, implementation, and refinement of multi-station intern bootcamp and longitudinal PGY-1 simulation curriculum
Collaborate with faculty and administrative teams to schedule and staff simulation sessions
Support PGY-2 residents in FLS, FES, FRS (fundamentals of robotic curriculum) preparation, onboarding, and resource access
Maintain and organize equipment, instruments, and biologic materials; ensure appropriate preparation and post-session turnover
Participate in ongoing innovation efforts including:
Low-cost model development
VR/AR-based education
Robotics skills education
Curate surgical videos and educational resources for structured skill acquisition
Contribute to program evaluation, feedback collection, and educational outcomes measurement
Engage in scholarly activity, including abstract preparation and conference presentation
Participate in departmental education meetings and contribute to simulation curriculum development
Requirements
Qualifications
Medical Degree (MD or equivalent)
Open to candidates who are medical graduates who are interested in general surgery or at any PGY-level of General Surgery training
Demonstrated interest in surgical education and simulation
Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
