MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

 

SUMMARY

Clinical

This endovascular neurosurgery faculty provides clinical expertise in patient care management and an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of vascular and endovascular neurosurgery. Maintains efficient and effective care of patients as part of an integrated program of curative and/or preventive medical services.

Research

The faculty leads a program applicable to endovascular neurosurgery research, assessment and treatment, to have a significant role in the Comprehensive Cancer Support Grant (CCSG) and the Brain Tumor Center (BTC) and may lead multi-investigator team research in the Department of Neurosurgery. 

 

KEY FUNCTIONS

Clinical

  • Performs professional duties of a vascular and endovascular surgeon and provides expert medical-surgical care for ambulatory and hospitalized patients.
  • Makes daily rounds related to assigned patients in the hospital, performs general and special examinations in the field of vascular and endovascular surgery.
  • Practices clinical surgery in an exemplary manner according to standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Surgeons, properly balanced with other academic activities.
  • Develops and maintains a clinical neurosurgical practice for endovascular patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
  • Completes patient documentation for medical records within periods provided by institutional policy.
  • Requires dictating in clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.
  • Keeps abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. Requires listening to and assimilating information from the conferences.

 

Research

  • Establish and maintain an innovative program applicable to endovascular neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery.
  • Maintain national and international stature as a key thought leader in the field of endovascular neurosurgery.
  • Obtain independent funding including for team science, publish manuscripts, and present at national/international meetings.
  • Participate in the leadership of the BTC with a specific emphasis on developing and sustaining multidisciplinary activities. The PI is expected to work in direct collaboration and synergy with the BTC Director, Chairs, and Section Heads of the affiliated BTC programs to develop research themes and strategic direction. The PI needs to understand the scope and portfolio of research activity of the BTC and be capable and willing to broker alliances and partnerships across M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to optimize the program.
  • Assist in providing annual metric reporting for the CCSG, the Executive Committee of the BTC and the executive team of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center regarding the performance of the BTC, including benchmarking to other programs.
  • Identifying programmatic deficiencies and devising corrective actions so that the BTC continues to have the greatest impact on science, discovery, and patient outcomes.
  • Work with the Developmental Office, Chairs, and Section Heads to leverage funding support for BTC infrastructure.
  • Provide requested metric information for the Brain Tumor CCSG including annual reporting and renewal.
  • Work with the Principal Investigators of Multi-disciplinary Grants including the Brain SPORE and the GBM Moonshot to reduce duplication of infrastructure and personnel while assuring optimal outcomes.
  • Advise faculty of the type of external funding available or suitable for their line of research as well as leading grantsmanship efforts for junior faculty, as well as tenure-track faculty.
  • May participate in the teaching activities of the department and/or the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
  • Must have ability to receive and give clear and concise verbal and written communications.
  • Must have ability and willingness to observe and comply with all institutional rules that follow OSHA regulations.

 

EDUCATION

Required: Doctoral degree (M.D., or equivalent) from an accredited school and be professionally competent.

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required: Residency requirements as defined by the Texas Medical Board Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Basic Life Support, or Advanced Cardiac Life Support. ABNS board eligible or certified; CAST fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery.

 

EXPERIENCE

Ideal candidate will have completed an advanced fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery.

Should exhibit a commitment to clinical excellence, research, innovation, teaching and collaborative practices.

Must have an established record of robust clinical experience and outcomes in both open and endovascular surgery and should be committed to teaching vascular surgery residents and advanced fellows.
