Accredited by the Council of Social Work Education through 2028 and housed within the Beaver College of Health Sciences, the Department of Social Work (SW) offers both undergraduate (BSW) and graduate (MSW) programs. Social Work is a consistently growing department serving approximately 350 BSW students and more than 80 MSW students annually. These programs are currently offered on main campus and in distance education sites in two local NC counties (part-time and full-time programs). In summer 2022, SW plans to launch a fully online Advanced Standing MSW program, as well as the development of an online BSW program slated to begin in Fall 2023. The Department provides a collaborative and supportive community with dedicated faculty and quality instruction. The department’s mission statement reflects its values and goals:
The Department of Social Work is committed to promoting a more inclusive and equitable society, beginning with respectfully engaging diversity and difference within our learning environments. Our goal is to prepare social workers who are intentional and reflective in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work. Please go here to see the department’s inclusive excellence statement. The Department reflects a long and rich history of serving the Western North Carolina region and beyond, maintaining strong community partnerships and collaborations, and has a reputation for graduating knowledgeable and skilled professional social workers.

Appalachian State University’s Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS), opened in 2010, is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities it serves through interprofessional collaboration and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach. BCHS offers nine undergraduate degree programs and seven graduate degree programs, which are organized into six departments: Communication Sciences and Disorders; Health and Exercise Science; Nursing; Nutrition and Health Care Management; Recreation Management and Physical Education; and Social Work. The academic programs are located in the Holmes Convocation Center on main campus and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art, 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District. In addition, the college supports the Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services and has collaborative partnerships with the Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program, the Appalachian Regional Health System and numerous other health agencies.
