The Director of Instructional Design (ID) leads the Instructional Design group and together they carry the Artisan banner for best-in-class custom learning products to clients and the industry. An expert in designing relevant, helpful training, the Director of ID provides direct oversight, including performance management and talent acquisition, for Lead IDs and IDs. 

This senior management position routinely collaborates with the Director of Development and the Director of Project Management. It requires a combination of leadership, technical expertise, imagination, deep curiosity, and a track record for innovation and problem solving in the learning field. Artisan uses an iterative design process. Forward-leaning, forward-thinking, all Artisan Directors constantly ask, “What could we do?” and “What’s next?”

This is a US-based full-time, remote position. It offers a competitive compensation package including paid time off, health insurance, life insurance, a 401k plan, and more. 


  • Provide support, skills assessment, and professional development guidance for the Instructional Design group.

  • Monitor individual performance, providing constant feedback and direction, as well as intervention as needed. 

  • Cultivate a culture of curiosity, bravery, and imagination for the Instructional Design group built on Artisan’s Core Values and consistent with Artisan’s instructional design philosophies.

  • Serve as in-house expert on instructional design and related technology.

  • Provide focused ID support for large and/or complex projects, particularly early in the process. 

  • Provide instructional design expertise to the Sales and Marketing departments as needed for demos, prototypes, award submissions, work samples, and other projects.

  • Hire and onboard new Lead IDs and IDs.

  • Maintain expertise and provide direction in current instructional design thinking, methodologies, and tools.

  • Collaborate with the leadership team on overall system and organizational improvements.



  • BA or BS, or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of practical instructional design experience at a senior level

  • Leadership experience with multi-function project teams of 3+ members

  • Experience interacting with stakeholders at varying organizational levels



  • Demonstrated expertise in instructional design approaches, techniques, and methodologies

  • Ability to guide the instructional design process to ensure course design that is creative, award-winning, and tailored to client needs

  • Strong client and subject matter expert management skills

  • Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills including mentoring, coaching, conflict resolution and team building

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Creative approach to problem solving with the ability to focus on details and the big picture

  • Ability to collaborate and work productively on a virtual team
