Job DescriptionThe Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in the field of Environmental Engineering, with an anticipated start date of July 2026.
We seek exceptional candidates whose scholarship and teaching strengthen the core areas of Environmental Engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a thriving research program in areas that may include, but are not limited to: Contaminants of Concern and Emerging Pollutants (detection, fate & transport, and removal); Novel Treatment Processes (advanced physical, chemical, and biological technologies for water, wastewater, air, and soil remediation); Environmental Chemistry and Water Quality; Air Quality and Pollution Control (monitoring, modeling, and/or mitigating); Solid and Hazardous Waste Management (waste minimization, beneficial reuse, and remediation of contaminated sites); Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Technologies; Environmental Systems Modeling; Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Processes; or other related modern areas. Candidates must have a record of publications in top journals, commensurate with their years of experience. Candidates should have experience or strong potential in securing external funding and in mentoring graduate students.
The individual hired will be expected to develop an internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program; teach existing courses in the environmental engineering program and develop new courses related to their own expertise, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; contribute to university and professional service; and contribute to an academic environment in which all students, faculty, and staff can thrive to their fullest potential. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary research activities across the campus and will have the opportunity to engage with the College's three institutes: the Institute for Data, Intelligent Systems, and Computation; the Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure and Energy; the Institute for Functional Materials and Devices; and/or with the University's three research centers: the Center for Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience; the Center for Community-Driven Assistive Technologies; or the Center for Advancing Community Electrification Solutions.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Lehigh University is dedicated to educating students in the principles and methods essential to advancing civil and environmental engineering, integrating emerging paradigms with rigorous traditional approaches to ensure graduates possess the expertise to balance societal welfare, economic growth, and environmental stewardship. Rooted in Lehigh's history, from John Fritz's pioneering research lab that launched thousands of engineering careers to decades of influential scholarship, the department's legacy continues to shape the profession, with alumni becoming leaders in industry and academia. Qualifications
Candidates must have earned a PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or other pertinent fields by the date of employment.
