Position/Job Summary:
The Category Manager at Fathom Manufacturing is responsible for building and optimizing a high-performing outsourced supplier network to support customer demand, margin goals, and delivery excellence. This role drives supplier evaluation, onboarding, and ongoing performance management—ensuring that Fathom's outsourcing strategy aligns with customer requirements and company growth objectives.
The Category Manager serves as the connective link between suppliers, the PMO, and operations—focused on speed, quality, and scalability across the external manufacturing ecosystem.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Supplier Evaluation, Vetting & Onboarding- Identify and qualify suppliers based on technical capability, lead time performance, and cost competitiveness.
- Lead vetting and onboarding processes, ensuring alignment with Fathom's manufacturing, compliance, and quality standards.
- Maintain supplier scorecards and conduct quarterly business reviews (QBRs) to drive accountability.
 
- Negotiation & Margin Management- Negotiate pricing and rate structures that achieve Fathom's targeted margin thresholds.
- Conduct annual pricing reviews and continuous cost optimization initiatives.
- Partner cross-functionally to ensure supplier financial models align with operational and commercial goals.
 
- Network Strategy & Capacity Planning- Anticipate company and customer demand to ensure the supplier network maintains the right balance of capacity and capability.
- Identify and onboard suppliers capable of handling "no-bid" opportunities to expand outsourceable work.
- Build a right-sized, scalable partner ecosystem aligned with both strategic and tactical business needs.
 
- Supplier Performance & Continuous Improvement- Monitor and report on supplier performance across delivery, quality, and responsiveness.
- Implement structured performance improvement plans for underperforming suppliers.
- Ensure outsourcing strategies and supplier readiness support key customer requirements and Fathom's white-glove service commitments.
 
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- On-Time Delivery (OTD):≥95%
- Quality:<1.5% RMA / Defect Rate
- Speed to Quote: Suppliers return RFQs within defined turnaround targets
- No-Quote Reduction: Continuous improvement in supplier engagement and bid participation
- Network Capacity: Maintaina right-sized partner network aligned to demand forecasts and capability gaps
- Outsourcing Run Rate: Drive a 40% improvement in outsourced production throughput
Requirements/Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, or Engineering (preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in supplier management, category management, or sourcing within manufacturing or industrial sectors.
- Strong negotiation and supplier relationship management experience.
- Proven ability to analyze spend, cost structures, and supplier capacity.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across teams and partners.
- ERP and supplier management software experience (Salesforce, Paperless Parts, or equivalent).
