Position Summary
The Controller provides strategic oversight for all finance, accounting, and reporting activities, ensuring the fiscal integrity and long-term sustainability of Mujeres Latinas en Acción. Managing a $6M annual budget, this leader supervises the finance team and serves as a vital bridge between financial data and mission-driven program operations. Reporting to the CEO and collaborating with a CFO Consultant, the Controller ensures exemplary annual audits and empowers program leaders through financial education and transparent reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Compliance
Systems Oversight: Maintain all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring strict compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
Internal Controls: Establish and monitor robust internal controls for revenue receipts, program expenditures, and overall budget integrity.
Audit Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for all annual audit activities and tax filings.
Reporting: Analyze and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to the President and CEO, designated leadership and Board Finance Committee.
Grant Accounting: Oversee complex grant accounting (government, corporate, and foundation), ensuring expenditures align with funder requirements and reporting deadlines.
Planning & Strategic Support
Budgeting: Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with leadership, providing monthly variance analysis and corrective action plans.
Cash Flow & Assets: Manage organizational cash flow forecasting and track the performance of invested assets according to policy guidelines.
Program Partnership: Collaborate with Program Directors to assess the financial efficacy of services and build systems that support seamless program delivery.
Team Leadership & Development
Staff Management: Supervise and develop the finance team by clarifying roles, providing training, and maximizing individual strengths.

Requirements
Qualifications & Skills
Experience: 7–15 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably beginning in audit and moving into executive-level reporting.
Non-Profit Expertise: Proven track record in a complex, multi-program non-profit environment; deep knowledge of Illinois government grant compliance is highly preferred.
Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of accounting software, Fund-EZ preferred, Microsoft Office apps, and experience overseeing software implementations.
Analytical Skill: Keen ability to interpret complex data to drive strategic decision-making, rather than just performing simple reporting.
Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to translate complex financial concepts for non-finance staff and board members.

Education
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
Preferred: CPA and/or MBA.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
This position has a hybrid work schedule which includes weekly in office presence.
Standard office environment.
Must be able to occasionally lift items weighing up to 20 lbs.
Travel to other Mujeres office locations.
Work evenings and weekends as needed.
