Description
About Access Architecture
Access Architecture is a mission-driven, minority-owned architecture and planning firm based in downtown Vancouver, Washington—just minutes from Portland, Oregon. Our work focuses on housing, community-based projects, and environments that serve people who are often overlooked by traditional development models.
Through our Outcome-Based Design process, we pair community engagement with academic research to deliver thoughtful, socially responsive, and environmentally responsible architecture. We also invest directly in our community through our 5+ Project, dedicating firm time to volunteer and pro bono work.
The Role
We are seeking a Job Captain to support Project Architects and Project Managers in the design and documentation of architectural projects. This role is responsible for the production, coordination, and quality of the drawing set, working closely under the direction of a Project Architect.
The Job Captain is a key technical contributor and emerging leader within the studio—someone who understands how drawings come together, takes ownership of their work, asks good questions, and is motivated to continue growing toward a Project Architect role.
What You’ll Do
- Take ownership of the production and coordination of architectural drawing sets
- Develop and maintain Revit models and drawing packages in collaboration with the Project Architect
- Assist with consultant coordination and integration of consultant drawings
- Perform space planning, architectural, and interior design work as required by the project
- Conduct preliminary building and zoning code research for team review
- Incorporate redlines and revisions from internal check sets
- Support permitting, bidding, and construction administration documentation
- Develop graphics and layouts for presentations
- Perform product, material, and systems research
- Ensure adherence to Access Architecture’s drawing standards and processes
- Collaborate closely with team members and contribute positively to office culture
While these are some of the typical tasks that will be performed, as an employee of small firm you will be exposed to the wide breadth of opportunities and responsibilities that come with the design process and the operation of an architectural firm.
What We’re Looking For
Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) from an NAAB-accredited program
Typically 4–7 years of professional experience, or equivalent experience producing coordinated architectural drawing sets
Experience with multifamily or complex building types preferred
Strong proficiency in Revit (required); familiarity with AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Microsoft Office
Understanding of how construction document sets are assembled and coordinated
Clear verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work collaboratively, take direction, and ask thoughtful questions
We recognize that experience is not always linear. If you do not meet every qualification listed but believe your skills, curiosity, and perspective would contribute meaningfully to our work, we encourage you to apply.
