Summary of Position: The United States Performance Center (USPC) is seeking a motivated and collaborative psychologist, clinical counselor, or mental health provider to support holistic mental performance and well-being initiatives for elite athletes. This role is a foundational hire for our new department and will work on-site in Charlotte, NC. The successful candidate will assist in the delivery of psychological and mental performance services, utilizing advanced technology and evidence-based protocols to enhance athlete readiness. This position requires exceptional communication, organization, and collaboration with members of a multidisciplinary team including coaching, sports performance, sports medicine, and nutrition staff. The Provider will help establish baseline protocols and data management systems within the department.
About Us: United States Performance Center is an elite training facility located in Charlotte, NC that specializes in research based athletic development, injury prevention, and overall health and wellness for Team USA athletes. Staff work closely together to create individualized programs for athletes to help them perform to the best of their ability. The United States Performance Center is currently home to a number of National Governing Bodies with both team and individual sports.
Role Overview: The Mental Performance Provider will execute the day-to-day operations of the mental performance program. This role balances direct athlete coaching with the technical management of performance tools (e.g., biofeedback, VR) and administrative support for departmental growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Athlete Support: Provide one-on-one and group mental skills training sessions (goal setting, imagery, relaxation, and focus techniques)
- Technical Implementation: Operate and manage neurotechnology and psychophysiological tools, including biofeedback, and heart-rate variability (HRV) monitoring
- Data Management: Assist in designing and performing baseline psychological assessments; maintain accurate documentation of services and track athlete progress via data-driven platforms
- Workshop Delivery: Deliver educational workshops and content on topics such as mental health literacy, social media management, and performance anxiety for resident and remote athletes
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Communicate regularly with the high-performance team (strength coaches, trainers, physicians) to ensure mental performance is integrated into recovery and training strategies
- Clinical Liaison: Serve as a first point of contact for mental health screening, utilizing established protocols for triaging and referral to external clinical resources
- Program Foundation: Assist in drafting departmental policies and emergency mental health protocols to be finalized by the program Director
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Masters Degree in Sport Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Performance Psychology, or a closely related field.
- Current NC license or eligible for NC licensure
- 3 - 5 years of experience providing sport psychology services to collegiate or professional athletes
Highly Preferred Qualifications:
- IOC Certificate in Sport Psychology
- Currently hold a CMPC (Certified Mental Performance Consultant) credential
- Training or certification in relevant methods such as biofeedback / neurofeedback, psychophysiological measurement (heart-rate variability, EEG, etc.), mindfulness / acceptance-based performance interventions, CBT-based performance psychology, resilience training, etc.
- Publications, presentations, or research in sport psychology
- Experience working with Olympic, National Governing Body programs, or military populations.
Other Requirements:
- Highly organized and able to adapt and execute in a dynamic environment.
Adept with technology and data management. - When necessary, the ability to work non-traditional hours including weeknights/ weekends and overnight travel (as reasonably needed)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish productive working relationships with multidisciplinary team and support services
- Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with sport psychology research and ethical standards of care
- Ability to support both in-person and remote athlete consultations
