The City of Columbia, Missouri, is now hiring a Park Planner to join our nationally recognized Parks and Recreation Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a creative, detail-oriented professional who is passionate about park design, community planning, and public service.
About the Position
The Park Planner is responsible for the planning, design, and development of Columbia's park system, trails, open spaces, and recreational facilities. This role includes preparing park master plans, coordinating construction and improvement projects, engaging with the public, and collaborating with consultants and other city departments.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in landscape architecture, urban or park planning, and project management, with a passion for creating high-quality parks that enhance the community's well-being.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and design new parks, playgrounds, trails, and recreational facilities.
- Prepare and update park master plans and long-range development strategies.
- Develop site plans, cost estimates, and construction documents.
- Oversee capital improvement projects and ensure they meet design and accessibility standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, and consultants to ensure high-quality outcomes.
- Facilitate community engagement meetings and present proposals to City Council and commissions.
- Monitor budgets, schedules, and project performance.
- Research and apply sustainable and environmentally responsible design practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Parks Administration, or a related field.
- Three or more years of professional experience in park or recreation planning, landscape architecture, or capital project management.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design software preferred.
- Knowledge of park planning, site design, and recreational facility construction standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present effectively to the public and city officials.
- Professional licensure as a Landscape Architect is desirable but not required.
Salary and Benefits
Starting salary range: $62,233 - $78,958 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
