JOB TITLE: Permit Technician I BCI/7
DEPARTMENT: Building and Codes
JOB SUMMARY: This position provides clerical and permit issuance services to the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Receives permit applications; accesses scope of project and relevant requirements; advise applicants,
issues multiple types of permits, such as building, plumbing and mechanical, once approved, within
departmental guidelines.
Tracks and maintains status of permit applications. Routes to appropriate personnel.
Processes a variety of documentation within designated time frames and according to established procedures; assists in maintaining department files; performs general clerical tasks.
Performs a variety of general accounting and bookkeeping functions. Calculates and verifies fees; accepts payments; records transactions and issues receipts; reconciles deposits.
Greets visitors and answers the telephone; assists by answering questions and directing them to appropriate personnel.
Files permits, plans, and other permitting documents.
Reviews computer system to ensure accuracy of inspections resulting and plan review activities.
Prepares and processes expired permit notification letters and assists public with permitting questions.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED
Knowledge of issuance of building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical permits.
Knowledge of administrative provisions of International Codes
Knowledge of construction plans and supporting construction documentation
Skill in the operation of computers.
Skill in dealing with the public.
Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
Skill in making decisions accurately and rapidly.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of this position permit intake, permit issuance, and permit processing duties in support of the department. Successful performance contributes to the smooth operation of the department.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in an office and in a stationary position at a desk or table. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: This position reports directly to the Building and Codes Director.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or GED.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for 1-2 years.
Possess a valid ICC (International Code Council) Permit Technician certification or the ability to obtain Permit Technician certification within one (1) year of employment.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Pay Grade: 10
