Preop/GI Clinical Role - Position Summary & Responsibilities
The PREOP/GI role is a dynamic, multi‑functional clinical position responsible for supporting patients and providers throughout the perioperative and procedural continuum. Team members function in several capacities, including GI technician support, patient preparation, circulating responsibilities, bronchoscopy assistance, anesthesia support, and post‑procedure recovery.
Primary Responsibilities
GI Procedure Support (GI Teching)
- Assist the GI physician during procedures.
- Maintain and manage endoscopy equipment, including holding scopes and assisting during procedural steps.
- Perform scope cleaning and reprocessing tasks according to established standards and infection control guidelines.
Circulating Nurse/Tech Responsibilities
- Circulate GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy cases as assigned.
- Assist the anesthesiologist with airway management and patient positioning.
- Complete accurate and detailed intra‑procedural documentation, including specimen collection and handling.
- Ensure safe, efficient workflow and communication throughout procedures.
Pre‑Procedure Patient Preparation
- Prepare patients for GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy procedures.
- Assist anesthesia with peripheral nerve blocks, including operating the ultrasound machine, assisting with catheter placement, and administering medications as ordered.
- Perform IV insertion, medication administration, medical history collection, shaving (as applicable), and comprehensive physical assessment with documentation.
Post‑Procedure Recovery
- Recover patients following GI procedures according to sedation recovery standards.
- Conduct sedation scoring, monitoring, and patient education.
- Complete thorough recovery charting and ensure safe discharge readiness.
Bronchoscopy Support
- Circulate bronchoscopy cases and assist anesthesia with sedation and medications.
- Manage specimen collection, counts, and detailed charting.
- Maintain equipment and ensure bronchoscopy suite readiness.
Call Rotation Requirements
- Participate in scheduled call responsibilities.
- Two 24‑hour weekend call shifts every six weeks (tech or circulating role).
- Four weekday call shifts following daily production within each six‑week period.
Other Requirements
- ASN required; BSN preferred.
- Active Indiana RN license or active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license required.
- Graduation from a nationally accredited nursing program required.
- Exceptions may be considered for candidates with 2+ years acute care experience, pending CNO approval.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through AHA required.
- Additional Life Support certifications may be required per department specialty.
