Second Assistant Engineer – Antarctica Research Voyages
March 1 – June 12 | Ports: Punta Arenas, Chile & San Juan, Puerto Rico
Join the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and sail aboard world-class research vessels supporting oceanographic research in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. SIO operates one of the largest academic research fleets in the world, equipped with state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation.
Under supervision, the Second Assistant Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and minor repair of all main and auxiliary engine room machinery while on watch. Duties include standing two 4-hour underway watches, maintaining machinery logs, supervising unlicensed engine room personnel, and serving as “Fuel King,” with responsibility for fuel systems, water-makers, bunkering operations, and tank soundings. Additional duties may be assigned by senior engineering officers as needed.

Requirements
U.S. Coast Guard Second Assistant Engineer license for related vessel.
U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95) and lifeboat endorsement.
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC) with 2nd Asst Engineer License.
Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
Other endorsements may be required.
