Full-Time | Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (occasional evenings required)
Starting Pay: $31.33 - $38.55 per hour (commensurate with experience)

The City of Columbia, Missouri, is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Planner to join our Community Development Department. This position plays a key role in shaping Columbia's future through comprehensive city planning, development review, and implementation of long-range community goals.
About the Position
The Senior Planner is responsible for managing and implementing city planning projects, including annexations, zoning, subdivision reviews, and Unified Development Code (UDC) amendments. This position also supports long-range transportation and neighborhood planning initiatives, oversees grant-funded planning projects, and works closely with the public, elected officials, and partner organizations to guide thoughtful, sustainable growth across the community.
Key Responsibilities
Manage comprehensive planning projects and prepare updates to city plans, agreements, and grants.
Review development applications, zoning requests, building permits, and business licenses for compliance with city codes.
Draft development-related agreements and propose amendments to the Unified Development Code.
Coordinate and manage transportation planning projects and grants in compliance with federal and state requirements.
Monitor transportation legislation and participate in Missouri Department of Transportation and federal planning meetings and webinars.
Prepare reports, staff recommendations, and meeting agendas for the Columbia Area Transportation Study Organization (CATSO) and other city boards or commissions.
Engage with neighborhood associations, community stakeholders, and city departments to promote effective and inclusive planning practices.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in city planning, architecture, landscape architecture, public policy, environmental studies, geography, construction science, or related field.
Three to five years of professional experience in urban planning, development review, or related fields.
Strong working knowledge of zoning, subdivision, and comprehensive planning principles.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and permitting or planning software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple complex projects, analyze technical data, and make sound recommendations.
Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience coordinating public engagement processes, facilitating neighborhood planning efforts, and preparing long-range comprehensive plan updates.
Familiarity with Missouri planning laws, transportation planning processes, and Unified Development Code administration.
Strong research and technical writing skills.
Work Environment
This position is primarily office-based with occasional outdoor or on-site work. Work may include public meetings during evenings. The role may require light physical effort and occasional travel to planning sites or meetings.
