The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (SPBS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale announces two tenure track positions in the Counseling and Rehabilitation Education (CARE) program. Candidates must have their Ph.D. in Counselor Education or Rehabilitation Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program. The anticipated starting date for both positions is August 11, 2026.
One opening is for a tenure-track assistant professor position. The second position seeks to hire a tenure-track advanced assistant professor or a tenured associate professor. For those applying for the Advanced Associate/ Associate Professor position, it is expected that the applicant will take on the duties as Program Director of the CARE program. Applicants for the rank of Associate Professor must demonstrate a record of teaching effectiveness and scholarship that is commensurate with appointment at SIU Carbondale at the rank of Associate Professor.
Area of research specialization is open, but candidates are expected to conduct productive and programmatic research and compete for extramural research funding. Candidates are also expected to teach graduate courses, with preference given to candidates with interest in clinical mental health and clinical rehabilitation counseling, in addition to specialty courses. Competitive candidates will be able to supervise graduate students in practicum and internship and are expected to mentor graduate students in research.
Applicants who are certified rehabilitation counselors, certified mental health counselors or licensed professional counselors or preferred. We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, substance use counseling, or a combination thereof. The Counseling and Rehabilitation Education program is accredited by CACREP. We have a university-based Clinical Center, a Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and an Evaluation and Developmental Center. There are opportunities to collaborate with our faculty at these and other university centers, as well as with rural community mental health centers, substance use and neurorehabilitation facilities, and the SIU School of Medicine.

The SIU Carbondale School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences is a vibrant and collegial academic unit that provides many opportunities for collaboration with faculty and students from programs in Behavior Analysis and Therapy (ABAi-accredited MS), Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Clinical Psychology—Adult and Child (APA-accredited), and Counseling and Rehabilitation Education (CACREP-accredited MS). The school houses undergraduate majors in Psychology and minors in Psychology, Behavior Analysis, Parent Training, and Neuroscience.
The Carbondale area is beautifully nestled between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and is home to the Shawnee National Forest and several state parks, with a low cost of living, temperate climate, and excellent schools.
